Our Thoughts About "DIVERSITY TRAINING"
Central to our diversity and cultural
competency work is the goal of bringing white participants to a new
consciousness around white identity. Most diversity initiatives fail to
include whiteness in the conversation, and instead study the marginalized
"other". When we recognize privilege and marginalization in any form, we
acknowledge the separation and silencing that limits our individual and
collective potential. By recognizing these factors participants are then
able to commit to do something about it. When we take action, we contribute
to bringing a more inclusive and multi-cultural reality to our workplaces,
our lives, and our world.
How We Do What We Do
Our model is solidly based on adult
experiential education. Adults learn best through a participatory process
and when their learning is connected to a felt, immediate need. Because of
the emotional charge that diversity issues can have, we work to create a
blame-free, safe environment with guidelines that encourage openness and
honesty.
Our Teaching And Learning Role
Working as a team whenever possible, we model
the openness, honesty, and positive regard that inclusivity requires. Of
different racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds ourselves, we include
our own stories to illustrate the personal journeys that are part of doing
this work. We encourage those who work with us to tell their stories and are
heartened every time by the respectful appreciation these stories receive
from fellow participants. We also continue to explore our own internalized
dominance and oppression, learning from each new encounter with each other
and with our clients.
What We Believe About The Change Process
We believe that to change the world we begin
by changing ourselves. Our work teaches people to trust themselves and each
other, creating the meaningful alliances that bring about needed change. We
are excited to work with inspired organizations that can instill lasting
solutions to both the societal and workplace challenges of inclusivity and
sustainability.
About Organizational Capacity Building
Rather than create a dependency on outside
consultants, we believe in building the capacity of an organization to take
responsibility for its own transformation. By offering support to in-house
staff we assist organizations in creating internal structures to continue
their learning and growing. In addition to experiential training, we have a
library of resources including films, documentaries and books that
supplement educational offerings.
